چکیده

The contribution of this paper is a novel spatiotemporal description of real video sequences. Our description comprises a set of surfaces that separate objects in the video, and an accompanying database which describes objects in the video. We explain how to automatically process video into our description, and use it to solve a long-standing problem in Computer Graphics; that of automatically producing non-photorealistic (NPR) animations from video sequences. We show empirically that our description is highly compact relative to alternative coding schemes, and that our NPR animation technique out performs the current state-of-the-art in automatic video painting by about an order of magnitude, in terms of temporal coherence.

An Image-based Framework for Animated Non-photorealistic Rendering

This thesis presents an image-based rendering framework for creating non-photorealistic applications that achieve frame-to-frame coherence, interactivity, stylistic flexibility, and visual detail. To date, most researchers pursuing dynamic nonphotorealism have focused on rendering specific visual styles, with methods for achieving frame-to-frame coherence within a particular style being key tec...

Stroke Surfaces: A Spatiotemporal Framework for Temporally Coherent Non-photorealistic Animations

This paper outlines a novel framework for the automated synthesis of non-photorealistic animations from video sequences. Our approach is unique among such animation techniques in that we process the source video sequence as a spatiotemporal voxel volume. Video frames are segmented into homogeneous regions, and heuristic associations between regions formed over time to produce a collection of co...

Cartoon Blur: Non-Photorealistic Motion Blur

Motion blur is a well-established technique which prevents strobing by making fast moving objects appear blurred. In cel animation however, different methods are used and this paper presents a new technique to emphasise the motion of cartoon objects through the application of geometry. We term the involved non-photorealistic motion blur as ‘cartoon blur’. In order to express cartoon blur, we ha...

Recognition of Visual Events using Spatio-Temporal Information of the Video Signal

Recognition of visual events as a video analysis task has become popular in machine learning community. While the traditional approaches for detection of video events have been used for a long time, the recently evolved deep learning based methods have revolutionized this area. They have enabled event recognition systems to achieve detection rates which were not reachable by traditional approac...

Enriching Visual Expressiveness

Since ancient times, when artists use clay, stone and brush strokes to capture a model or a scene, and even more recently when they use photography and video as their artistic tools, they focus on expressing details which go beyond the physical description of the subject. This includes, for example, the description of the scene ambiance, the nature of the characters and their relations, the mot...
